Ya Never Know… pt. 3

ERERERERER

&nbs p;     “You invited Kerry Weaver?” Neela asked, over the music of the bar. The bar had a DJ that evening and was playing dance music; there were several couples dancing on the dance floor. They’d secured a pool table in the back of the room, Ray and Pratt were both talking to Jing-Mei and Sam was chatting with Robbi. The dark blonde haired doctor was describing something to Samantha causing Sam to laugh. Abby let her eyes rest on Ro for a moment and then, pulled them away with some regret. Why did Robbi intrigue her so much?

&nbs p;     “Yes, I did. Look, I think they’d make a good couple,” Abby said, in her own defense. She looked around and didn’t see Kerry anywhere. Maybe she’d decided to not come, and Abby was slightly disappointed.

&nbs p;     “You did see the fireworks this afternoon? Or were you oblivious to the fact, that they were about to take each other’s heads off?” Neela sipped her beer and Abby shook her head, the soft dark curls falling into her eyes. Neela let her eyes wander back to Ray and then tore them away again, she was going to have to stop looking at him, in that, hungry way. Both ER doctors seemed, to be pining for someone, without even realizing it. Abby noticed the look that Neela was giving Ray.

&nbs p;     “Sometimes, that sort of heat translates into something hotter in bed,” Abby said, with a smile of experience. Neela made a grunt of disgust, at the vision of Weaver, in bed with anyone, except for Sandy. She got up off the chair, seeing a shadow over Abby’s shoulder, and thinking, it was time to bust Abby.

&nbs p;     “I think, Kerry and Robbi, aren’t the only ones that need to get laid,” Neela announced, and Kerry tapped Abby on the shoulder, just as Neela was walking away. Abby felt the touch on her shoulder and hung her head.

&nbs p;     “What did she just say?” asked Kerry.  Abby grimaced, and felt the blush of a child with her hand caught in the cookie jar. She turned around and opened her eyes to sneak a peek at Kerry, whose face was deadly serious, and Abby swallowed her pride.

&nbs p;     “Nothing?” Abby offered, with a wry smile. Kerry leaned up against the bar and studied Abby for a long moment. Abby had been a good friend to her and had never judged her.

&nbs p;     “Doctor Abigail Lockhart…” Kerry threatened, and Abby shrugged her shoulders and said. “What?”

&nbs p;      Abby realized, for just a minute, that maybe it was dumb idea; trying to set Kerry up with Robbi. There was no-way those two people had anything in common at all, but then again, Sandy and Kerry hadn’t been your typical couple either.

&nbs p;     “I know you. You have something up your sleeve.” Kerry ordered a glass of wine and Abby kept up the innocent act, smiling and tucking a stray hair behind her ear.

&nbs p;     “I can’t have anything up my sleeve, Kerry.” Kerry tapped Abby’s leg with her cane and Abby laughed, “Seriously, I can’t have anything up my sleeve.”

&nbs p;     “Why is that? Are we at County working you too hard? Not leaving you enough time to plot and plan?” Kerry asked her, with a half smile.

&nbs p;     “No.” Abby pursed her lips.

&nbs p;     “Then what is it?” Kerry asked, sipping the surprisingly good wine.

&nbs p;     “I’m wearing shorts sleeves; therefore, I cannot have anything up my sleeve.” She blinked innocently and Kerry found herself disarmed and charmed, and allowed herself to laugh, for the first time, in a long time.

ERERERERER

&nbs p;     “Are you sure you were held captive for two years? Because you have to be good to keep your talents this sharp and you are cutting down me girl, you are a sharpshooter. You run the table like a pro,” Ray said to Robbi.   The woman chuckled lightly, flipping the pool stick around, in a very Tom Cruise-esce way, and winked at the young doctor. She leaned over the table and squinted at her next shot,  not liking the view she said, in a gentle voice, “I’m sure Dr. Ray,” leaving the table grunting and bristling over the odd comment by the young doctor.

&nbs p;     “That was a callus thing to ask,” Jing-Mei said to Ray, and he shrugged, not thinking it was a deadly offense. Robbi was a straightforward sort of girl, even if she was gay. J-Kwon’s Tipsy blared on the DJ’s speakers, a bass thumping beat. Jing-Mei was moving to the beat and Greg was watching her hips swaying.

&nbs p;     “No, it wasn’t,” Robbi said, to her, as she stood up and moved to the other side of the table, checking out other shots. “It was a fact. Actually, when I decided to go to school in Boston, my brother cut me off…” She shook her head and scratched her chin. “I paid for school this way… Hustling.” R obbi laughed, and Ray hung his head, he knew he was beat.
