Ya Never Know…  pt. 8

ERERERERER

0;     Abby slid down the wall of the trauma room, her arms dead from the 22 minutes of CPR, then cracking the man’s chest, and finally calling his TOD.

0;     “You ok?”  Pratt asked, and Abby nodded.  Abby was on hour 12 and should have been getting ready to go home.  Yet, here she was, still pounding the pavement and running the hallways.  This was her life; all of her friends were here, there was nothing to go home to,  nothing but an empty apartment.

0;     “Yeah, I’m ok, just beat, you know.  I’m back here in six hours, so, I think I’m going to go lay down in the Lounge, get a few hours of sleep, shower, and start all over again,”  Abby said, and Pratt shook his head no.

0;     “Naw, you know you gotta go home.  Shake this one off Abby.  He was too far gone the minute they rolled in here with him.”  Abby grimaced.

0;     “I’m good,” she said again, thinking that if she went home, that bottle of wine, that was gathering dust, in the back of a cabinet over the stove, was going to look too inviting.

0;     “You sure?”  Abby nodded and Pratt touched her shoulder gently in reassurance. Abby waited for a few moments, got up, and looked over at the dead man.  Her mind oddly wandered to Robbi, for just a moment.

ERERERERER

0;     “I just don’t think Morris is Chief material.  He has no skills to speak of, have you seen that boy in a trauma?  He insults more than he praises, and I think Clem said, he was the biggest ass kisser he’d ever seen in his life.  That means a lot coming from Clem,” Robbi was saying, and then took a sip from her glass of wine.

0;     “He certainly is that, but he was the only real candidate.  Pratt didn’t throw his hat into the ring, so there was nothing else that we could do.  We took the best from what we had available,” Kerry stated, and Robbi kept shaking her head.

0;     “I think I’d rather have Neela, as CR, than have Archie, and his odd sense of humor,” Robbi stated.

0;     “I’d rather have Abby,” Kerry swaggered back quickly.  Robbi laughed and muttered something with a smile.  “What?”  Kerry asked her, and Robbi put the wine glass down.

0;     “I said, so, you’d like to have Abby.”  Robbi wiggled her eyebrows and Kerry’s eyes went wide.

0;     “I didn’t mean it like that.”  Kerry slapped her hand on the table.  “I recall you dancing with her and not me,” Kerry offered, and Robbi reached for her glass again.

0;     “True, I did dance with her…” Robbi said with a smirk.  The dance, a memory that she could replay at any time, and for some reason that memory kept her wanting for more.  She pushed it out of her mind and said,  “…but I’m rather sure she’s straight, and I’m not looking.  I’m still getting over my last relationship.”

0;     “How do you mean?”  Kerry showed the newest ER numbers to Robbi and the woman winced.  She took the paper and began to read the research lines quickly.

0;     “When I left, I was in a relationship.  Her name was Kate and we were in love; head over heels in love.  She was supposed to head out and meet up with me two months later, however, we never got the chance, because, I was taken hostage first.  I’d always hoped that she’d never come to try and find me or my body.”  Kerry’s face blanched.

0;     “What did she say, when you came back?”  Kerry asked, reaching over and filling her glass of wine.

       0;     “I don’t know,” Ro shrugged.

0;     “What do you mean, you don’t know?  You never told her?”  Kerry almost yelled, thinking of Sandy for a moment; thinking of loving someone, for so long, and being away from them, and then getting a second chance.  What she wouldn’t give, for just five more minutes with Sandy.

0;     “Robert…” she began, and took some wine, “…wrote to me every day, while I was gone, and even after I died.  His venting, or his journal, I guess, to me. He told me that Kate had moved on.  She left Boston and moved to Florida.  She kept in touch with Robert for a while…”  She drifted off at the thought of her brother.  “Then she just stopped.  It was too hard for her I’m sure.  The last he heard she was happy and with someone.”
