Ya Never Know… pt. 7 ERERERERER 0; Samantha sat by his bedside holding his now clean hand. The pulse ox was on his finger the monitors telling her he was alive. She was watching Luca breathing. Him living was a minor miracle. They had lost him twice, once before Robbi had cut into him to remove the metal bar, and once, just as she was removing it from his side. 0; Abby had been suctioning the blood as Robbi knelt on the floor to get a better view. She’d been right, the angle of the metal bar had been pressing on his aorta. The surgeons had scoffed and yelled at Robbi, placing her on administrative leave, as of an hour ago. A quick, hard, and undeserving, punishment in Sam’s mind, but Robbi had smiled at Kerry as she’d told her. Robbi knew she’d done the right thing even if it meant her job. Robbi had gone to get Alex from school, an offer that stunned Samantha, but one she’d gladly accepted. She’d met Alex once and the young man had been taken with Robbi. 0; “Sam?” Luca whispered thickly as he turned his head. She shot up from the chair sending it skittering against the wall. “Thirsty,” he said. Sam sat the bed up and he paled as she did. She offered him the straw from the cup and he took a small sip. “What happened?” He asked, finally leaning back and rubbing his thick hair into the pillow. 0; “Someone hit you. The other driver is dead. You came in with…” Sam stopped. Luca saw the serious look on her face, and suddenly realized, he was as bad off as he felt. He reached up with his right hand and touched her face. He knew that she had a lot of things to tell him, but right now wasn’t the time. He already knew, so he could wait. 0; “I know. You don’t have to say it again, I know,” he said. He pulled her very close and let her cry, until Robbi came back with Alex. ERERERERER 0; “One month?” Robbi said, a week after Luca’s accident, as she sat in Kerry Weaver’s office and Kerry nodded. Kerry had fought hard for Roberta, but the surgical attending had been livid that an ER doctor had been performing surgery in the ER. “One month?” she repeated, as she played with her hair. Ro’s eyes were stormy and seemingly lost as she thought about all of the free time she was going to have on her hands. 0; “I know it seems like a long time to be…” Kerry began, and Robbi interrupted her with a soft voice, sighing ever so slightly. 0; “An eternity...” Robbi said softly, rubbing the bridge of her nose. What was she going to do for a month? Go shopping? Rest? Get more than three hours of sleep in a night? The first thing she’d done after finding out that Robert had died was find a job. One day after she’d arrived she was looking for a job, and being a doctor was the only thing she knew. She’d become a doctor at 25. She had completed her internship in Boston so, at 28 she’d gone off into the jungle to play doctor. She’d never had the luxury of a real life and she wasn’t sure she wanted to start now. 0; “I can offer you something?” Kerry said, with a smile that seemed to be flirtatious. Robbi’s eyebrow shot up and she leaned back crossing her legs. She was wearing old jeans and a battered Rolling Stone’s concert T-Shirt. 0; “Ah, yeah?” Robbi said, with an equal amount of flirting in her voice. She liked Kerry and not just for her sexual preferences. She ran the hospital with a strict hand, even though her departments were under funded and understaffed. They’d disagreed on the Morris issue, but after that it had been much smoother sailing. She’d given the young man a stern talking too. 0; “How about we discuss it over dinner?” Kerry asked, and Robbi nodded with a lopsided grin. 0; “Sure.” ERERERERER 0; “Like we need one less attending on the floor? This is dumb; we have interns who don’t know a toe from a spleen,” Ray said with a grunt. He was referring to a new batch of interns that had graced them with their presence that morning, when he heard that Robbi had been canned for a month. 0; Neela added with a snort, “Two. Do you think Luca is going to be down here playing doctor any time soon?” A silence descended over the area. |
